Forth Road Bridge Open Week Planned for June 2011

Published on 16 Feb 2011

The operators of the Forth Road Bridge have revealed plans to hold an Open Week in June of this year.

The event is expected to feature a special exhibition on the history of the bridge and its maintenance challenges, as well as tours of the structure for members of the public.

A report to the Forth Estuary Transport Authority (FETA), the organisation responsible for operating and maintaining the bridge, recommends staging the event from 12-19 June 2011. Members of the FETA Board are set to discuss the proposal at their next meeting on 25 February.

The announcement follows the success of a similar event held in October 2009, which attracted over 1,000 visitors and overwhelmingly positive feedback.

FETA Convener Phil Wheeler said: “The bridge’s first Open Week in 2009 was held to mark the structure’s 45th birthday. Over 97% of visitors told us the event should be repeated in future, so we’re planning to do it again this year.

“I’m hopeful that we can make this year’s event an even bigger success and provide the opportunity for even more members of the public to get a close-up look at the work and dedication that goes into keeping the structure safe and open to traffic.”
