Forth Bridgemaster Tops the Bill in New York

Published on 17 Aug 2009

The engineer in charge of the Forth Road Bridge will today and tomorrow deliver lectures at a prestigious international bridge operators’ conference in New York.

The International Cable Supported Bridge Operators’ Conference is the most important annual gathering of the world’s major bridge operators, where the engineers responsible for maintaining and operating the world’s largest and best-known bridges meet to learn from the experience of others and exchange best practice.

Barry Colford, Chief Engineer and Bridgemaster at the Forth Road Bridge, will present papers on the maintenance of the bridge’s main expansion joints and on the feasibility of replacing or augmenting the main cables of a long span suspension bridge.

Barry Colford said: “As an engineer it’s a privilege to work on such innovative projects at an iconic structure like the Forth Road Bridge. We have always worked closely with other bridge operators, so I’m delighted to be able to share some of what we’ve learned with our industry peers.”

FETA Convener Phil Wheeler added: “It’s great that the work carried out by Barry and his team is receiving this kind of international recognition. The Forth Road Bridge is certainly in safe hands.”
