Cabinet Secretary meets Amey apprentices at Forth Road Bridge

To mark the start of Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2015 (18 – 22 May) Keith Brown MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure, Investment and Cities met with Amey apprentices to find out how young people are benefitting from Modern Apprenticeships in Scotland.
The meeting at the iconic Forth Road Bridge follows on from the success of National Apprenticeship Week where leading public and regulated services provider, Amey, committed to hiring over 1000 apprentices in the next four years.
Amey operates and maintains the Scottish Trunk Roads Unit South East (STRU SE) on behalf of Transport Scotland and from 1st June 2015 will take on the management and maintenance of the Forth Road Bridge and future Queensferry Crossing.
Mr Brown will met a group of apprentices representing the range of Amey’s business in Scotland, including highways, social housing, public service, education and built environment contracts.
He learned the value of apprenticeships in helping businesses tackle the problem of an ageing workforce, by allowing experienced employees to pass on their knowledge to a future generation of skilled workers. He will also hear from Amey apprentices who are learning a range of practical, transferable skills that will stand them in good stead throughout their career.

“The Scottish Government is fully committed to the programme, with the aim of having 30,000 new opportunities by 2020, and this week will highlight the value of this to employers.
“Infrastructure and transport are key parts of our economy, supporting thousands of jobs across numerous sectors, like construction, roads and rail. It has been great to meet some of Amey’s Modern Apprentices today and hear about the skills they are developing and how these will benefit them in future.”
